lakonia nature

The natural landscape of Laconia is such that it renders it unique from all aspects. The imposing presence of Mount Taygetos traversing the prefecture to the west and Mount Parnon to the east are the dominant elements. Between the mountains lies the fertile valley of Lacedaemon, which is crossed by the historic River Evrotas, symbol of the ancient Spartan "culture". The Laconian Gulf to the south comprises the two capes, Capes Taenaro and Malea, the southernmost corners of continental Europe as a whole.

From the "rough" and arid beauty of Mani and the exquisite coasts of Gythio, Neapoli and Elafonissos to the exceptional Monemvassia and the fjord of Gerakas; from the windswept ridges of Mount Taygetos to the slopes of mild Mount Parnon and from the small villages of north Laconia to the fruitful lands of the south, Laconia is a land of powerful images and feelings. Abounding in nature reserves and organic farming facilities, valleys rich in orange groves and hills sown with olive trees, full of flora and indigenous plants that are unique worldwide, Laconia is now discovering the uniqueness of its nature and is attempting to preserve it.
